The Link Visiting Scheme

What is ‘The Link’ ?   Homephoto

The Link Visiting Scheme is a befriending service mainly to the over sixties throughout Wokingham Borough who for one reason or another find themselves in need of friendship and support. Perhaps due to illness or moving house, bereavement or disabilities we can find ourselves feeling far from friends and family and end up spending long periods of time on our own.
Yet meeting new people and developing new friendships is nearly always life-enhancing and you’re never too old to start. You can find new friends at every stage of life.

We aim to match volunteers with elderly people who would love to see a friendly face on a regular basis; perhaps once a week or once a fortnight for an hour or so. The Link works as a partnership between various churches in Wokingham Borough, Woodley Age Concern, and Woodley Lookout where it began initially nearly ten years ago. It is supported by Wokingham Borough Council.

Faithworks AwardsFaithworks Awards Ceremony

'The Link' was shortlisted to be considered for a 'Faithworks Award' and some of us attended a ceremony at the House of Commons on 8th June 2009. Twelve organisations were shortlisted from a total of over 200 applicants and The Link was one of four groups in our category of  'Community Excellence Award: Adult Health and Social Care'.

Unfortunately, we did not win the overall award for our category, but were pleased to receive a donation of £100 and a framed certificate as well as the experience of attending the event which was also attended by two MP's and other prominent figures. Thank you to all volunteers who enabled us to achieve this!
