Local Information - Earley

Earley TC
Most of Earley is located within the Wokingham Borough, but the area from the Three Tuns crossroads  is part of Reading. This means that some residents living over the border in Reading think of themselves as belong to Earley even though they pay their Council Taxes to Reading Borough Council.

Earley grew rapidly both before and after World War II, and became a town in 1974. During the late 70s and early 80s the Lower Earley housing estate was built, almost doubling the town's population to the current level. This also included two new primary schools , together with a large supermarket complex (which now includes ASDA), and a sports centre. In 1988 a second shopping area – Maiden Place – opened. In 2001, a swimming pool was added to the sports centre, which residents had been wanting for years.

Until recently, Lower Earley was the largest private housing development in Europe.

Earley has its own railway station, situated along the Wokingham Road. This was opened in November 1863 and is on the South Western Trains Waterloo line. Other local stops on this line include Wokingham, Winnersh and Bracknell.
